Botswana: New coal scheme for Shumba

Botswana’s Shumba Coal Ltd announced a heads of agreement on 6 March with South Africa’s Mulilo Renewable Project Developments for the joint development of the Mabesekwa Export Independent Power Plant as part of the South African coal baseload independent power producer (IPP) programme. Mabesekwa will be a coal-fired power plant with a captive coal mine. The parties intend to sign a comprehensive joint development agreement within two months. On 25 February, Shumba announced a sale and purchase agreement with Daheng Group Botswana for the acquisition of the Mabesekwa prospecting licence in north-east Botswana.
