African Energy, African Energy Live Data and Gulf States Newsletter are looking for an online production editor to sharpen up the online presence of the publications, data and reports, to curate their websites, and raise their profile on Google News.

Job description

The role involves:

  • Evaluating stories provided by the editorial team and deciding on their presentation on each publications’ website

  • Co-ordinating with editors to ensure that stories are creating the maximum impact, and providing feedback on individual stories and at regular editorial meetings

  • Sub-editing copy as necessary

  • Implementing search engine optimisation (SEO) policy

  • Working with the African Energy Live Data team to present and promote project updates

  • Orchestrating social media campaigns to maximise exposure to new stories

  • Providing the marketing team with material to promote stories in email campaigns

  • Overseeing the fortnightly production of a PDF edition of each publication using Quark desktop publishing software

  • Contributing to Cross-border Information’s in-house training scheme

In the role you will:

  • Work with a highly skilled and motivated team of expert journalists

  • Take a leading role in the publishing of prestigious specialist newsletters

  • Help guide the expansion of these publications into new areas

  • Be involved in cutting edge reporting on themes of energy transition, improving African energy access, and analysing both African and Gulf States politics

 

Candidate background

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a flair for publishing and promoting online news

  • Demonstrate good news sense and a passion for getting the most out of stories

  • Ability and willingness to make editorial assessments and to refer them back to the editorial team

  • Experience of online business publishing (knowledge of the energy sector will be a bonus but is not essential)

  • Competence in sub-editing and checking copy for errors

  • Knowledge of desktop publishing software, such as Quark

Details and remuneration

  • Salary will be dependent on experience and the negotiation of terms.

  • Promotion and salary increases are available and based on performance

  • In an initial phase, the job will be offered on a part-time basis. However, as the role evolves there will be potential for the candidate to grow with it in an ambitious company with international reach.

  • This is a remote-working position (although candidates located in the region would be welcome to work out of CbI’s Hastings office). We are eager to hear from candidates based in Africa or the Gulf.
